Evan Parker and Georg Graewe recording due May 15

On May 15, 2012, nuscope will release a new duo recording with the great saxophonist Evan Parker and pianist Georg Graewe live from the Domicil in Dortmund, Germany on October 29, 2010. According to liner notes writer Bill Shoemaker, "Evan Parker is twelve years older than Georg Graewe. However, there's a countervailing metric, albeit a fanciful one, which places the saxophonist and the pianist in closer historical proximity. It is the FMP catalog. The Berlin-based label had issued 31 albums over seven years prior to New Movements, the then 20 year-old pianist's debut, in 1976; Parker played on seven of them, including Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun and three Globe Unity Orchestra recordings. Graewe led a new "generation" of improvising musicians into a history-shaping catalog, one comprised of the core documents of first generation European improvisers like Brötzmann and Alexander von Schlippenbach." This is the second recording by the duo - their first was Unity Variations on the Okka Disk label in 1998.

The recording is very different than that of many in the nuscope catalog. First, there are only 3 pieces (4 pieces on the upcoming download on HD Tracks), the longest of which clocks in at just over 37 minutes! However, the improvisations are always exciting and never pedantic or sprawling. This is thrilling live music, and is a great contrast to Parker's recent duo recordings with pianists Uwe Oberg, Misha Mengelberg, and Matthew Shipp. Parker focuses on tenor here and Graewe plays a beautiful Bösendorfer Model 225 grand piano.

Welcome to nuscope recordings

Producer Russell Summers started nuscope recordings in 1998 to document daring and life-affirming music with roots in jazz, free jazz, free improvisation, and modern avant-garde classical composition. The musicians who perform this music have the ability to stimulate, mystify, and move; they also have the gift to shatter preconceived perceptions of music and sound.

With sound artists such as Fred Van Hove, Georg Graewe, and others, nuscope recordings hopes to bring about fresh perspectives of improvised and related music. Although the music on the nuscope recordings label will vary—one thing remains consistent. That is, all of these musicians present their music, regardless of label, with added artistic value.

Lisa Ullén Solo Piano Recording

Swedish pianist Lisa Ullén's first solo piano disc, titled Catachresis, has now been released on CD and is now available as a download on HDTracks (44.1/16 and 44.1/24). Lisa's vision of solo piano includes echoes of Sten Sandell's subtle use of clusters and the innovative inner piano preparations of Sophie Agnel or Magda Mayas. The music is also stunningly dynamic and dramatic.

This 13-track CD, which was financed by the Swedish Arts Council, was beautifully recorded by engineer Johannes Lundberg at Epidemin Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden on a new Fazioli grand piano and mastered by Alan Bise at Azica Productions in Cleveland. Pianist Louis Goldstein, who wrote the liner notes for Sten Sandell's Solid Musik, also contributes liner notes for this release.

After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, pianist and band leader Lisa Ullén worked in a wide variety of musical settings before concentrating on improvisation. Lisa has performed with bassist Nina De Haney, saxophonist Dror Feiler, and many other fine musicians.

The newly re-mastered Hornets Collage by guitarist Scott Fields, clarinetist François Houle, and bassist Jason Roebke is now available as a download only on HDTracks.

The trio's music comes out of the Jimmy Giuffre late 50's tradition of reeds, guitar, and double-bass, but extends upon that tradition with challenging compositions and tastefully integrated extended techniques. According to Glenn Astarita in the All About Jazz web site, "Overall, Hornets Collage is lyrical, enduring, spacious yet subtly captivating as the trio pursue layered themes and sweet-tempered choruses while the music breathes life and conjures up vivid imagery proportionate to an impressionist painter of landscapes or dreams."

Since its original CD release in late 1999, Scott Fields has released a string of invigoratingly innovative CDs, François Houle has continued to be a strong force in both improvised and composed chamber music settings, and Jason Roebke has built on his reputation and become a highly-respected first call bassist in Chicago.

This newly re-mastered session is available through HDTracks as a download with a new 8-page booklet which includes additional liner notes from François Houle. The original issue continues to be available only as a compact disc with its original mastering and graphics.
